This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Michigan Progressive Governance Director based in the United States.

The Michigan Progressive Governance Director will lead initiatives to strengthen progressive governing power and help elected officials translate shared values into meaningful policy outcomes. You will also support electoral efforts and develop pathways for grassroots activists to engage in legislative priorities. This is a remote, full-time position, preferably based in Lansing, with substantial in-person engagement at the State Capitol during legislative sessions and travel throughout Michigan.

Accountabilities

    • Lead initiatives supporting progressive legislators at federal, state, and local levels, with a focus on strengthening their ability to advance shared policy priorities.

    • Build and maintain trusted relationships with aligned elected officials, particularly state legislators, and key advocacy and community organizations.

    • Convene regular meetings and collaborative opportunities for elected officials to exchange ideas, learn, and develop shared strategies.

    • Design and coordinate programming that strengthens alignment and solidarity between elected officials, advocacy organizations, and community partners.

    • Collaborate with local and state partners to deliver legislative training, political education, and professional development opportunities.

    • Analyze state and local legislative landscapes and provide strategic recommendations to advance progressive policy objectives.

    • Connect elected officials with advocacy groups, coalitions, national policy experts, and peer networks across states.

    • Monitor priority legislation and identify opportunities to advance shared messaging and coordinated advocacy.

    • Develop talking points, communication toolkits, and other resources on priority issues.

    • Support elected officials in communicating effectively with their constituents and districts.

    • Assist aligned incumbents with reelection planning as part of broader electoral and political strategies.

    • Work with organizing leadership to create opportunities for activists to support aligned elected officials and priority legislation.

    • Train staff, activists, community leaders, and newly elected candidates on legislative processes and power-building strategies.

    • Undertake other related responsibilities as needed.

    • Requirements:

      • At least 5 years of professional experience in government, advocacy, politics, or community organizing.

      • Demonstrated experience working closely with elected officials to develop and advance progressive policy.

      • Strong facilitation skills and the ability to build trust, solidarity, and shared strategy among stakeholders with different perspectives.

      • Ability to quickly understand new political contexts, legislative environments, and policy areas.

      • Sound judgment and decision-making skills in complex and sensitive political situations.

      • Strong empathy and relationship-building abilities, with a collaborative approach to working with diverse individuals and organizations.

      • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate conflict constructively.

      • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

      • Ability to work independently, manage complex projects, and coordinate multiple priorities simultaneously.

      • Valid driver's license, access to a vehicle, and willingness and ability to travel throughout Michigan.

      • Preferred qualifications:

        • Knowledge of Michigan's political landscape and state legislative processes.

        • Previous experience working on electoral campaigns.

        • Spanish language fluency.

        • Benefits:

          • Annual salary range: USD $64,900–$85,800, with final compensation determined by experience, geographic location, and the position's scope. The upper end is reserved for candidates who significantly exceed the minimum qualifications.

          • Comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees, including:

            • Paid time off.

            • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance.

            • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs).

            • Opportunity to contribute to meaningful policy initiatives and strengthen progressive representation across Michigan.

            • Full-time bargaining unit position represented by Workers United, affiliated with SEIU and Local 1115.
